Going on a yoga retreat as a couple (or with a friend)

How a week works when one of you practises and the other does not, and what changes when you travel together.

Two guests balance in tree pose and make a heart with their arms on a hilltop

Plenty of people arrive in pairs: couples, old friends, a parent and an adult child. Often one of them books it and the other comes along. That works better than you’d think, with a few things worth knowing first.

When one of you does yoga and the other doesn’t

This is the most common version, and the reluctant half usually ends up enjoying it. The trick is not pretending the week is only about yoga. Between practices there is trekking, swimming in the river, tuk-tuk rides through Fort Kochi, food, and long afternoons with nothing scheduled.

In class, a good teacher gives each person their own version of a posture, so one of you can work towards a headstand while the other works on standing comfortably. Nobody is compared to anybody.

You don’t have to do everything together

A retreat is a rare chance to spend a week side by side without a schedule to negotiate. It works best if you let each other opt out: one goes on the long trek, the other reads. One takes the afternoon massage, the other sleeps. Shared meals and evenings hold the week together anyway.

What couples tend to notice

Phones get used less, because there’s little signal in the hills and less reason to check. Conversations get longer. People who normally see each other exhausted at the end of a working day get seven mornings in a row in good light. That does more for a relationship than a fortnight of sightseeing.

Rooms and practicalities

Ask about room arrangements before booking: whether a double room is standard, and whether bathrooms are private or shared. We can arrange either, and it’s an easy question to answer honestly by message.

It costs less for two

Our Better together price is $899 each when two of you book the same week, instead of $1,299. That applies to couples, friends, siblings, anyone booking as a pair. Details are on the pricing section.

Who it suits less

If one of you actively doesn’t want to come, a week of early mornings and shared meals won’t change that. And if you want a beach holiday with cocktails, this isn’t it. Be honest with each other before you book, not on the second morning.

If it sounds right, our 2027 dates are here, or message us and tell us about the two of you. We’ll tell you plainly whether the week fits.
