Choosing your retreat date: Kerala in April, June, September and October
Each season in Kerala has its own character. Here’s what to expect from each of our four retreat dates.
Kerala is green all year, but the season changes the feel of a retreat. Here’s what each of our four 2027 dates is usually like, so you can pick the one that suits you. Weather varies from year to year, so treat this as a guide rather than a forecast.
21–27 April 2027: warm and bright
April is one of the hottest months on the Kerala coast, so expect warm, humid days in Fort Kochi. Up in Munnar it’s far more comfortable, with warm days and cooler nights. Mornings are often clear, and afternoon thunderstorms become more common as the monsoon approaches.
Choose April if you love warm weather and long, bright days outdoors.
14–20 June 2027: the monsoon
The southwest monsoon usually reaches Kerala in early June, bringing heavy rain, especially in the hills. It’s also when Kerala is at its most dramatic: waterfalls are full, the tea hills are a vivid green and mist drifts through the valleys. There are fewer travellers around, too.
Choose June if you’d love lush, misty landscapes and don’t mind the rain. Pack a rain jacket, and expect plans to shift a little with the weather.
4–10 September 2027: green and fresh
By September the monsoon is usually easing, though showers are still common. The landscape is lush after months of rain, the rivers are flowing and the air in Munnar feels fresh and cool. Kerala’s harvest festival, Onam, falls in August or September in most years.
Choose September if you want green hills with fewer heavy downpours than June.
10–16 October 2027: between the monsoons
October brings the northeast monsoon, which tends to arrive as afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms rather than all-day rain. Mornings are often clear, the hills are still green and Munnar is pleasantly cool.
Choose October if you’d like clear mornings for trekking and a green landscape.
