Yoga retreats in India for complete beginners

If you have done almost no yoga and are wondering whether India is too much, start here.

A surprising number of people arrive on retreat in India having practised only a handful of times, or never. They book because they want the week, not because they are yogis. If that’s you, this is what to know.

Yes, you can start here

Beginners are welcome on almost every retreat, and a good teacher adapts each posture to whoever is in the room. What matters is asking directly before you book: how are mixed levels handled, and how big is the group? In a small group you are seen, adjusted and supported. In a class of thirty, you are on your own.

What makes a retreat beginner-friendly

  • Teachers who watch you rather than demonstrating at the front for an hour.
  • Two hours with space in them, rather than ninety minutes of continuous flow.
  • Options offered for every posture, so sitting one out isn’t a failure.
  • Hands-on adjustments offered with consent, and easy to decline.
  • A mixed group, so you aren’t the only person who hasn’t done this before.

The fears people actually have

“I’m not flexible.” Nobody is, before they practise. Flexibility is a result, not an entry requirement.

“I’ll hold the class back.” You won’t. Teachers build sequences that work at several levels at once, and experienced students spend most of the class looking at the floor.

“Two hours is too long.” It includes warming up, resting, breathing and lying still at the end. It passes faster than you expect.

“India will be overwhelming.” Parts of India can be. Kerala is one of the gentler places to land: English is widely spoken, distances are short, and on a retreat you’re collected at the airport and never have to work out transport.

What helps before you go

Practise a little at home so the first morning isn’t a surprise. Fifteen minutes, a few times a week, is enough: we put together eight poses to try. Tell your teacher about injuries on day one, not day four.

Our week

Our retreats take beginners and long-term practitioners in the same group, and sessions are tailored so both get something real. Achu and Nithin were born and raised in Kerala and have taught for years, and the group is small enough that nobody disappears into the back row.

You can read what a first retreat week actually feels like, or write and tell us how much yoga you’ve done. Honest answers get honest advice about whether the week suits you.
