How to book a yoga retreat in India: a step-by-step guide
Visas, deposits, flights, insurance and timing, in the order you actually need to do them.
Booking a retreat abroad involves more moving parts than booking a hotel. Here is the order that keeps it simple, with the things people leave too late.
1. Pick the week, then check it twice
Choose your dates before anything else, and look at what the season does: Kerala in June is a different week from Kerala in January. Count travel days at both ends. If the retreat runs Wednesday to Tuesday, you need flights either side.
2. Ask your questions before you pay
Group size, who teaches, what’s included, room arrangements, dietary needs, cancellation terms. Any retreat worth booking answers specifically and in writing. Our 12 questions are a useful checklist.
3. Reserve your place with a deposit
Most retreats hold your spot with a deposit and take the balance closer to the date. Get the amount, the payment method and the refund terms confirmed by message, so you have them in writing. Ours: a deposit secures the place, full refund if you cancel 30 days or more before.
4. Book flights
For Kerala, fly into Cochin International Airport (COK), which connects easily through Gulf and Asian hubs. Book once your place is confirmed, not before. Arriving a day early is worth it if you’re coming a long way.
5. Apply for your visa
Most visitors need a tourist visa for India, and many nationalities can apply for an e-Visa online. Check the current requirements for your passport, and apply in good time rather than the week before. You’ll usually need your flight details and accommodation address, which the retreat can give you.
6. Get travel insurance
Buy it when you book, not when you fly, so cancellation cover applies from the start. Make sure it covers medical care in India and any activities you’ll do, such as trekking.
7. Tell them the details
Send your arrival time and flight number so transfers are arranged, and mention dietary needs, injuries, health conditions and anything you’re nervous about. This is the message that makes the week fit you rather than the average guest.
8. The fortnight before
- Check your passport has at least six months left on it.
- Photograph your passport, visa and insurance and email them to yourself.
- Tell your bank you’re travelling.
- Start practising gently if you haven’t been.
- Pack light, with layers for the hills. Our packing list is here.
