How to choose a yoga retreat: 12 questions to ask first

The questions that separate a week you will remember from one you will endure, and what good answers look like.

A rugged green ridgeline under a bright sky full of clouds

Retreat websites all use the same words: authentic, transformative, all-inclusive. The differences show up in the answers to specific questions. Send these to any retreat you’re considering, including us, and see how they reply.

About the practice

  1. Who teaches, and what is their background? You want a name and a lineage, not just a studio.
  2. What style, and how much practice per day? Two hours of Hatha is a different week from two Vinyasa sessions daily.
  3. How big is the group? Small groups mean you get seen and adjusted. Large groups mean you don’t.
  4. Are beginners genuinely welcome? Ask how a session is adapted when levels are mixed.
  5. What is the policy on hands-on adjustments? A good answer mentions asking consent, and that you can decline at any time.

About the week

  1. What does a typical day look like? Look for time that isn’t scheduled.
  2. What is included, and what costs extra? Transfers, excursions, treatments and entry fees are the usual gaps.
  3. What are the rooms like? Private or shared, and whether bathrooms are shared.
  4. What food is served, and can you cater for my diet? Ask before booking, not on arrival.

About the practicalities

  1. How do I get there, and are transfers included? In India, a transfer can be a four-hour drive.
  2. What is the cancellation policy, and what deposit is required? Get it in writing.
  3. Can I see recent reviews and real photographs? Recent matters more than numerous.

Signals worth noticing

Good signs: a person replies rather than a template, they ask about your experience and injuries, they’re specific about what isn’t included, and they say no to things they don’t offer.

Less good: pressure to book today, vagueness about who is teaching, photographs that look like stock images, and promises about what the week will cure.

Our answers, briefly

We run seven days: two in Fort Kochi, five in Munnar. Yoga and meditation daily, taught by Achu and Nithin, adapted to whoever is in the room. Kerala meals, Ayurvedic massage, airport pick-up and drop-off, and activities in both places are included. Flights, visa and travel insurance are not. Cancel 30 days or more before and you get a full refund.

See everything that’s included, the prices, or just ask us your own version of these questions. We’d rather answer twelve emails than have you arrive to a week that isn’t what you wanted.
