What to pack for a yoga retreat in Kerala

From layers for cool Munnar mornings to swimwear for the river, here’s what to bring for a week by the sea and in the hills.

Your week covers two very different climates. Fort Kochi is warm and humid at sea level, while Munnar, at around 1,600 metres, can feel cool in the early morning and evening. Pack light, breathable clothes, then add a few warmer layers for the hills.

For yoga and meditation

  • Two or three sets of comfortable, breathable yoga clothes
  • A light shawl or sweater for meditation, when the body cools down
  • A reusable water bottle

For the coast

  • Light cotton or linen clothing
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
  • Clothes that cover your shoulders and knees, for visiting churches, temples and other cultural sites

For the hills

  • A fleece or light jacket for cool mornings and evenings
  • Walking or trail shoes with good grip for trekking
  • Swimwear and a quick-dry towel for river swims
  • A light rain jacket, especially for the June, September and October retreats

Everyday essentials

  • Insect repellent
  • Any personal medication, plus a small first-aid kit
  • A plug adapter. India uses type C, D and M sockets at 230 volts
  • Some cash for small purchases and tips

Documents

  • Your passport and Indian visa. Many nationalities can apply for an e-Visa online, but check the current requirements for your country before you travel.
  • Your travel insurance details. We highly recommend cover for cancellations, medical emergencies and travel disruptions.

And an open mind

The most useful thing you can bring doesn’t take up any space. Come ready to slow down, try new things and meet new people. If you’re unsure about anything on this list, message us before you travel.
